summertime dreaming

Now that Sydney is moving deeper and deeper into winter (well, as close as Sydney can get to any kind of winter) I am finding myself dreaming of tropical days away. Now matter how much I am relishing my crisp morning runs every weekend along the coast from Bondi to Coogee, I can't help looking at the latest o/s fashion spreads with the slightest pangs of envy. The upside to all of this? I can start planning my wardrobe for the warm weather, with inspiration coming from the latest spring/summer collections at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. Despite my usual penchant for a monochromal palette or a mixture of neutrals and khakis (especially, the khakis) I will definitely be trying out some of the zingy combos I've spied at shows like Bianca Spender, Shakuhachi and Ginger & Smart. Number one on my hit list? Rusty, earthen orange and bright, bold blue. On second thought, maybe that's best left to the sunrise on my morning Bondi runs. That's the plus side of this kind of dressing being on the other side of winter - I've still got six months to warm up to the idea.

The title of this post probably sounds like a dig, rather than the lame pun that it is. Kate Waterhouse, Fashion Editor for the Sydney Morning Herald - also happens to be the daughter of Gai Waterhouse, champion Australian horse trainer. Although her style isn't anything groundbreaking and (as someone mentioned quite a while ago on her tFS thread) is a little similar to that of Lara (dancing extraordinaire) Bingle's, she looked glossy and polished. That little similarity may have something to do with the fact that Christine Centenera plays (or in Bingle's case - played) her personal stylist. I've also seen a few commenters note that she's like the Australian version of Olivia Palermo, and I have to say I agree a little bit. I saw her at a show during the week, when she was wearing her Natasha Fur, and she looked amazing. I want her Burberry jacket. And maybe her Balenciaga sandals.

Some of the things I've been up to whilst neglecting this blog...

Moving! I've finally moved into a little terrace house in Paddington in Sydney, just off Oxford St. So I've been spending what little spare time I have.....

Exploring. Love finding little gems around my local area in the way of boutiques, vintage shops, bustling cafes and hidden bars. Took my friends from Adelaide to a cute pizza place when they were visiting which had grass sprouting from the ceiling and crayons supplied at all the tables to entertain the (grown-up) kids. Can't wait to trawl around the eastern streets some more with my friend from the CakeFace.

Lusting over some very very very amazing items both online and from some of Sydney's best stores - namely the Corner Shop in Paddington, and namely thanks to the ever spot-on Hannah-Rose, from my favourite Capture the Castle. Some of these include (and are most definitely NOT limited to....)

Some stud

Valentino and Givenchy. Makers of some of the best studded heels going around. Valentino's autumn/winter 2010 studded heels were endorsed by nearly every editor and front-rower at the spring shows. Especially popular (although not on my radar) were the kitten-heels, with Alexa Chung and even Giovanna Battaglia getting back to basics (if you call Valentino a basic) with the lower-to-the-ground variety. And when talking about anything studded, who can forget C.Centenera, self-proclaimed lover of anything studded, with her t-bar Givenchy sandals.

Trio of leathers, and Schoulers, and Wangs..

Two (or should I say three... cubed) of my current favourites. Shoes from Alexander Wang's resort 2011 collection: Noemi, Freja (an update of the original) and Kasia. And not forgetting the one and only pocket tee, which will always be a perennial favourite. Then we have the clutch version of the famed PS1 messenger bag by Proenza Schouler, fondly (and appropriately) coined 'the pouchette'. What I love most about these accessories however, apart from the bleeding obvious, is they seem to go with... everything. That's right, even more leather, in the way of an Acne a-line, 3.1 Phillip Lims or a Catherine Malandrino mini. And my soon-to-be delivered Michael Kors chronograph watch and (hopefully!!!) Jordan Askill heart ring don't look out of place either.

Let's be honest, these outfits aren't anything special, and they don't try too hard to be fashion-y... which is exactly why I love them. Clean, simple and minimal. Just the way I like my dressing. And proof that an overdose of leather can be done in an Australian summer. Need further convincing? Enter Christine Centenera, to the rescue once again- this time in Paris, Celine, and her new favourite Alaias. Oh yeah, and lots of leather.

Fine rings and little wings

I love everything about all of this fine jewellery. There's something about the juxtaposition of such a thin and dainty band with more heavier, solid pieces. I plan to pair my Jordan Askill (when I get one, of course) with my new Michael Kors gold man-style watch. It's just like wearing a sweet, sequin skirt (long-line, Taylor Tomasi style) with a slightly scruffy oversized sweatshirt. Been looking for winged earrings like those Gina Tricots for months. Need them in my life, now!

Day 2: Christine Centenera

As fashion editor of Harper's Bazaar Australia, this girl has some serious style. Dating print-happy Aussie designer Josh Goot doesn't hurt her wardrobe either. Like Carine, Ms. Centenera knows when she's on to a good thing; and sticks with it. I'm talking about her Givenchy studded sandals, of course. Having a self-confessed penchant for anything with "studs, metal detailing or patent leather", I can personally vouch for this one: when I spent some time in the HB offices, these babies showed up: twice. In one week. Her uncanny ability to pull together such sharp outfits from pieces she's already worn and make it look entirely different, just by switching up the heels and maybe adding or subtracting a certain Celine jacket, she makes this dressing thing look downright easy. Whether she's effortlessly pairing a fierce (for want of a better word) heel with grey marle, mixing Balmain and Balenciaga with Aussie staples by Bassike and Bonds, she's got that dishevelled chic down to a fine science. It's just part of her DNA. She sweats style.
