These three looks come from a show at Paris fashion week in October of 2009. Two years, four full seasons and countless collections ago. Since then, fashion has been throwing up trends left, right and centre - from peaked shoulders and body-limning dresses to colour blocking and wide and flowing silhouettes reminiscent of '70s bohemia. There has been little in the way of constants, of fashion that stands still. Fashion that ignores trends, ignores the constraints of an industry and its so-called tastemakers. These three looks are by a label that here, in September of 2011, needs little in the way of introduction. A label that four seasons ago was known largely only by international fashion editors and bourgeois Parisiennes, just another name in the dusty stables of LVMH, hidden behind shining cash cows like Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Dior.

Fast-forward two years, and elements of these three looks (if not the looks in their entirety) are still completely relevant. Two years may not seem like all that long, but in the world of fashion - where in-between collections like resort and pre-fall are increasingly dotted amongst mainline spring and fall seasons, demanding more and more variety - it is a minor eternity. A simple leather tee, tucked into an a-line canvas skirt, a streamlined leather dress that both hugs and skims the body in equal proportion. Wide-leg, high-waisted pants that simultaneously manage to avoid the ridiculousness that the notion of high waists and a wide legs provokes. These all quite simple, classic pieces of clothing. The beauty is there in the details, in the refinement and ease of it all - the roundness of a collar, the length of a hem or the cut of a trouser. Clothes that have appeared to inspire many slightly different (and not so different) incarnations on other runways in these two years following. For what is so special about these clothes, these three pieces of clothing, is that they were modern back then, and they are still modern now. Put simply, they are clothes that women can wear, and then get on with their lives.

Reality is a funny concept, especially for people in fashion, who so often seem to occupy that little space outside that avoids the very idea. The fashion bubble, as it is known by some. Not in the case of L.A. native Kimberly Ovitz, whose latest collection (and one of the very first for the spring/summer 12 collections) was inspired by the idea of "disaster versus relief and man versus nature". Or, more simply, the tragedy that followed from the earthquakes in Japan in March. Her show was made up of 19 looks in a palette of white and red (to reference the Japanese flag?) as well as black and wafts of earthy ombre shades. I've seen pieces from her past collections in a Désordre in Darlinghurst, and the slightly cobwebbed knits and asymmetric silhouettes are definitely something I would wear.

It's not groundbreaking fashion - unlike, say, an earthquake - but that is precisely the point. Easy, wearable pieces for girls who like their clothes with a slight, but ever so sexy, edge.

The three covers of Vogue Australia's October issue. Lensed by Kai Z. Feng with styling by Vogue Aus fashion editor Naomi Smith - straying (well, slightly) from her usual palette of monochrome model-off duty grunge. What better to welcome the spring season than aquamarine, white and airy pink chiffon. Granted, it is the October issue, a month smack bang in the middle of spring, but when the magazine is on stands and it's still raining out, it's a fresh change from bleak skies. The knowing stare, that slicked-back hair and those minimal coverlines - barely any coverlines - stand to show just how good every single photo is. But then again, maybe it goes to show just how good the girl is.

So this is what ex Paris Vogue editors get up to... when they're no longer editing Paris Vogue. Convincing the likes of Naomi Campbell, Dasha Zhukova, Mario Sorrenti et al to get together and in the name of a Barneys campaign. And, because they probably didn't have anything better to do that day, her kids offered up their time too. So here's an impossibly cool, Rick Ownes-clad Carine in her own ad campaign for her first client since going freelance. Julia in Tisci's panther-print Givenchy. Vladimir in his own clothes, because French boys are cool like that. And some Natasha Poly, just for good measure. And just like that, she's back. And so am I.

Natasha Poly for CFDA nominee Alexander Wang by Inez and Vinoodh. The designer scooped up the prize for Accessory Designer of the Year - and was presented with his award, quite fittingly, by none other than Iris Apfel. (And for those who are stumped by the name, think: thick rimmed specs and strings and strings of beads). And, about time too; those booties and studded bags (and their chain store imitations) have been popping up on counters and Polyvore sets the world over ever since Wang's very first accessories line back in '07. The amount of times I've lusted over a Freja bootie, or a Rocco duffle - don't get me started on those Alla leopard-print wedge mules - and I still have not gone ahead and added-to-cart. Might have to change that, and this might just be the piece to do it with...

Three seasons on and I can't get this collection out of my head. Even though three seasons - a year and a half - doesn't seem that long ago, in the fashion world, where everything moves and breakneck speed and then some, it seems much longer. Khakis, grey marle, straight shapes and drill cotton; silk skirts and boyish pullovers with toirtoise-shell glasses and leopard print furs. There are the things that can be worn through seasons and seasons and seasons. You can look back through your wardrobe in years to come, past the batwings, past the neon bursts of colours, even past those skin-tight jeans, and unearth these timeless gems. Classic, but with just enough of a twist to keep you coming back for more. Dries Van Noten A/W 2010.

summertime dreaming

Now that Sydney is moving deeper and deeper into winter (well, as close as Sydney can get to any kind of winter) I am finding myself dreaming of tropical days away. Now matter how much I am relishing my crisp morning runs every weekend along the coast from Bondi to Coogee, I can't help looking at the latest o/s fashion spreads with the slightest pangs of envy. The upside to all of this? I can start planning my wardrobe for the warm weather, with inspiration coming from the latest spring/summer collections at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. Despite my usual penchant for a monochromal palette or a mixture of neutrals and khakis (especially, the khakis) I will definitely be trying out some of the zingy combos I've spied at shows like Bianca Spender, Shakuhachi and Ginger & Smart. Number one on my hit list? Rusty, earthen orange and bright, bold blue. On second thought, maybe that's best left to the sunrise on my morning Bondi runs. That's the plus side of this kind of dressing being on the other side of winter - I've still got six months to warm up to the idea.

I never thought I'd find myself wearing, let alone coveting, a piece of Navajo-inspired clothing. Not that I have a problem with the native americas being the source of fashion inspiration (what isn't 'inspiration' for fashion these days?) - I've just never seen myself as a girl who can pull off something so... western. Fringing, suede and spurs have never really been my cup of tea. And when cowboy boots were having their (most recent) heyday back in 2006, I did in fact wear them... to a cowboy and indians themed birthday party. Back to Marant. Ever since I clicked through her most recent collection on style.com a few months back, I literally cannot stop thinking about this sweater. And I'm not even one that usually goes for prints! Which makes this even doubly strange. I do like me some marle however, and this sweatshirt (while not marle, I know) errs on the luxe-y side of dressing down. Which I am all for. I have started this new way of thinking about potential purchases (inspired by dead fleurette) that they will only earn a place in my wardrobe if they well and truly belong there. That is - if they go with everything else that's already there. So that means no impulse purchases. And this, as luck should have it, will most definitely go with my near-uniform of khaki bottoms, white shirts and black blazers. And make it less boring, at that. I feel it is most definitely justified.

The title of this post probably sounds like a dig, rather than the lame pun that it is. Kate Waterhouse, Fashion Editor for the Sydney Morning Herald - also happens to be the daughter of Gai Waterhouse, champion Australian horse trainer. Although her style isn't anything groundbreaking and (as someone mentioned quite a while ago on her tFS thread) is a little similar to that of Lara (dancing extraordinaire) Bingle's, she looked glossy and polished. That little similarity may have something to do with the fact that Christine Centenera plays (or in Bingle's case - played) her personal stylist. I've also seen a few commenters note that she's like the Australian version of Olivia Palermo, and I have to say I agree a little bit. I saw her at a show during the week, when she was wearing her Natasha Fur, and she looked amazing. I want her Burberry jacket. And maybe her Balenciaga sandals.

d'Orsay

I am sightly obsessed with this shape of shoe. While I don't usully gravitate towards a stiletto heel, there is just something so timeless - not to mention incredibly sexy - about the exposed arch and cutaway sides of this style. We were trying so hard at work today to figure out what the style is called, and, as usual, I couldn't sleep until I had my answer. The d'Orsay. Yes, like the Parisian museum. The Frenchness of the name seems quite fitting I think when you consider the sex appeal that the sharp heel, pointed toe and sleek cutaway ooze. And they are definitely a shape that is timeless and loved by all - men included (unlike, say, harem pants). Although I am definitely going through a head-over-heels (sorry) obsession with wedges, I know that I will never be able to pass up the perfect d'Orsay.

Swedish blogger Elin Kling is proof (if any is even needed) that d'Orsays add instant chic to any pairing - ripped blues included. I could keep my wedge obsession intact with the Olsen's interpretation of the shape for their label Elizabeth and James - the perfect combination of my two favourite types of shoes. But, I really would love nothing more than to get my hands (feet, rather) on a pair of the patent heels from Stella McCartney's A/W 2010 collection. For now though, I'll settle with the black suede pair I spied in Zara. Oh, the joys of our Sydney store!

Sometimes, in this little fashion bubble I live in, I am sure that things I consider to be of interest, those living in "the real world" would not have not a clue about, let alone care. This is definitely not the case with the opening of Australia's flagship Zara store in Sydney. From the rumours that began circulating as far back as 2007, to their confirmation by the way of the brand's billboards in the windows of three levels of Sydney's new Westfield since late last year, the wait is finally over. Zara has landed on Australian shores. And what a landing it seems to be. The opening night on Tuesday - which drew a crowd of over 500 VIPs - was only a small indication of things to come.

With the store opening its doors to the public a 9am yesterday morning, I literally haven't been able to walk through Pitt Street mall (let alone make it into the store) without pushing my way through a teaming mob. When you consider the fact that yes, people, they are just clothes (did I really just say that?) it seems rather ridiculous the amount of queuing that has resulted in excessive security and even police patrols outside the store. Maybe an indication that we should have had Zara a long, long time ago. But, better late than never! Which brings me to the entire point of this post... a sentiment that certainly wouldn't be shared by the Australian retailing community. Let's just say, stores such as Witchery, Sportsgirl and Cue should be very, very afraid.

The Spanish giant - who, by the way, will be dropping product into stores twice every WEEK - will provide some much needed to change to the Australian high street. Their price point is quite a bit lower than that of existing Aussie retailers - while their quality and breath of selection is often much higher. They have such an insanely quick turnaround (for those of you who paid attention in economics class - it's called supply and demand), where they can see something on the catwalk, follow the dissection of trends through the various media outlets and have runway-inspired pieces on their shelves within three weeks. That's before the original designers even know which pieces from their collection will be manufactured. And - of course - all before our own retailers have had a chance to blink. So what may be bad news for the Australian retail sector can only be good news for the Australian consumer.

Before I went overseas and discovered the joys of Zara, along with H&M, Topshop, Cos and many other stores us Aussies miss out on, I was quite happily forking out $149.95 for a pair of Sportsgirl jeans. $60 for a plain tee from Witchery? No problem. $189 for those cute wedge boots at Wittner? You betcha. (Yes, these prices aren't that expensive... but when you consider the fact they are for clothes from mass-market chain stores that everyone else will be buying... they become grossly overpriced. I'd rather spend a bit more a get quality Australian designer pieces.) I distinctly remember stepping inside my very first Zara store in Saint Germain in Paris, and seeing things I could almost swear black and blue were going to be expensive. Not so. Half an hour later I walked out having paid around a hundred euro (at the time, about $130) for a black, knee-lenth, 100% wool coat. Fast-forward to Nice where I picked up some (nice) suede wedge boots for 50 euros that haven't seen a week go by without me wearing them. And don't even get me started on my classically tailored wool blazer with real silk lapels that is slightly reminiscent of YSL's famed Le Smoking... that cost me about 80 bucks.

We'll have to wait and see, but the message Zara is sending to our retailers seems to be clear - shape up (that is, lower prices or up your product offering), or move out. For far too long we have been ignorantly paying the exorbitant prices set by local retailers because we didn't know any better. We had no choice. Until now. Retailers - be scared, shoppers - rejoice. Zara has arrived.

Some of the things I've been up to whilst neglecting this blog...

Moving! I've finally moved into a little terrace house in Paddington in Sydney, just off Oxford St. So I've been spending what little spare time I have.....

Exploring. Love finding little gems around my local area in the way of boutiques, vintage shops, bustling cafes and hidden bars. Took my friends from Adelaide to a cute pizza place when they were visiting which had grass sprouting from the ceiling and crayons supplied at all the tables to entertain the (grown-up) kids. Can't wait to trawl around the eastern streets some more with my friend from the CakeFace.

The first week of one of the two craziest months of the year has finally kicked off. For fashion people, that is. New York Fashion Week, and the start of the autumn/winter 2011 season. The meteoric rise continues for Alexander Wang, who almost jokingly cited his latest collection as 'ironic luxury'. Coming from any other designer, this would sound like your typical pretentious fashion babble, but for the GQ/CDFA menswear award winner, no truer words could have been spoken. With a touch of almost unfamiliar luxury (soft angora knits fading into silken satin) the pieces still retained the cool-girl factor the brand has become synonymous with. I'm not quite sure what the cool downtowners (and many wishful ~~bloggers~~ others) would be wearing (or wanting to) if it wasn't for the relaxed luxe of this designer. Very big fan of the cleverly combined textures - knits, sheers and silks all in the one piece, and all with minimal fuss. And another (one of many) show highlights? Natasha Poly taking her rightful place centre stage - closing the show for the infallible Mr. Wang with her newly reacquainted blonde locks.

Speaking of infallible, it seems another young New Yorker is too walking down that very path. Joseph Altuzarra, previous Marc Jacobs design intern, is another name who will surely appear come the round up of season trends. Loving that the utilitarian look of seasons past is appearing yet again. Mixed textures (sheers, satins and knits), voluminous outerwear, delicate dresses and again, funnily enough, furry shoes, were all central features of his latest outing. Fuzzy footwear aside, I wonder if any of his sky-high leather lace-ups will be gracing the feet of editors come next season of Tommy Ton-lensed street snaps. Time will tell.

Rodarte's Black Swan

I finally saw Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan at the cinemas lat night. I'm not going to lie, I went to see it was purely for the Rodarte costuming (for which the designers are not even eligible for credit should the film win an any 'best costume' awards, but that's another story). Simply put, the costumes are amazing. Not only to look at, but because they play such an integral part within the storyline itself, and if I say much more the appeal will be lost so you'll just have to see it for yourself!

The Mulleavy sisters, Kate and Laura, have always had ballet, but in dark, theatrical ways, running through their collections, so the pairing was almost too good to be true. Apart from designing every single ballet costume, main star Natalie Portman was almost exclusively outfitted by the duo. She even (unsurprisingly) stepped out in custom-made Rodarte in Venice last year, where the film opened the festival. Funnily enough, it wasn't until I saw Natalie's character, Nina, appear in a floor-length white tulle gown, with trademark criss-crossing detail, and a cobwebbed sweater in one of her many intense rehearsals, that I suddenly remembered my underlying motive for being there. If this isn't testament to me being captured by the storyline, I don't know what is.

Haute Noorda

Spring '11 couture season kicked off in Paris yesterday, and it's good to see couture isn't the only thing making a comeback. Last fall's couture shows prompted those in the know, possibly after attending Givenchy's 11-look showcase, to herald it as having returned to its intimate (yet still extravagant) roots. And it seems Amsterdam-born model Kim Noorda has experienced a similar sort of transition. While 2010 was a quiet one in terms of runway appearances, if the start of couture week is anything to go by (Noorda has already walked for both Christian Dior and Armani Privé) 2011 is shaping up to be quite different. Here's hoping she'll be a mainstay as we round the bend into fashion month, kicking off in New York in less than three weeks. Three weeks!

Orange Olivia

Olivia Palermo. One of the very few reality TV stars/ socialites who has gone the distance and still has some sort of relevance in the world in which their interest lies. While peers of hers ( i.e. the collective joke that was Speidi), this girl shows she has some talent away from the screen. No mater how bitchy she may have seemed as Whitney Ports's nemesis on The City, this girl sure knows a thing or two about style. She reminds me of pop-princess-turned-serious-designer Vicky B. At the start of their fashion 'careers', I'm sure there were many inside the fashion industry (remember Olivia's snotty attitude at Elle? And Posh's days as a full-time plasticised WAG?) who would most definitely have written them off. After numerous campaigns for Hogan, ASOS and spanish giant Mango, as well as a collaboration with jewellery designer Roberta Freymann, it seems as Olivia has achieved a seemingly unattainable kind of staying power. A regular fixture on the international fashion circuit, her citrus and plaid combination at the Ermenegildo Zegna men's show in Milan is further proof that Olivia's batting at the top of her fashion game. Props for that amazing Hermés crocodile skin clutch and her forever sleek tresses. And for the ever so slightly, I'm-too-cool-for-you popped collar. And, just because, here's a close up of those incredible McQueen shoes...

Americana Muse

Looking very much like a 90s supermodel (and not simply because of the comparisons to Linda Evangelista), Arizona Muse and her adorable son Nikko feature in February's US Vogue in this spread lensed by, you guessed it, Peter Lindbergh. What gets me most about this editorial (and no, it isn't her brows or that captivating stare), is Tonne Goodman's styling. While many of the looks are from American designers such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, who were at the tops of their (and fashion's) game during the 90s, looks from an international cast that include Ferragamo and Hermés are represented in a way that is undeniably American. You can't help but cast your mind back to the American Dream, with its blue and white and red, its free-spirited wholesomeness so clearly captured in the Tommy by Tommy Hilfiger TV 'commercials' back in the day. Speaking of dreams, Muse, with her skyrocketing ascent towards the supermodel peak, is surely living one of her own. A favourite of Anna Wintour's, it won't be long before she stirs from her American dream, and when she does, it won't be for less than $10,000 a day.

Socks and sweaters

Socks and sweaters. There's something about this combination that is just so... cosy. A homespun twist on Julia Roberts' Pretty Woman days when she donned Richard Gere's white shirt... and only his white shirt. Despite being in the midst of a Sydney summer, there's something about this shot that makes me want ditch the light cotton tees for an oversized woollen sweater and snuggle up. With knitted socks to match. It's an easy kind of comfort that doesn't even have much to do with fashion (unless the sweater and socks in question are Michael Kors of course). The combination conjures up primary school memories of sitting round a creekbed campfire, with molten marshmallows oozing out of their slightly blackened shell, hanging off a whittled down gumtree twig before being gobbled up with greed. Those were the days where my camping attire consisted of grandma's hand-knitted jumpers, in an array of creams, blues and pinks, dad's Explorer socks and not much more.

Those are the best images, the ones that gently nudge you into recalling a time or memory of which you will be forever fond, allowing you to revel in its glory once more. And this one by Mario Sorrenti for the February issue of Vogue Paris does just that. Styled by new editrix Emmanuelle Alt, we get a quick glimpse of Natasha Poly and her wispy fringe in the stunning editorial simply called "Natasha Poly" - further proof that simplicity is most definitely where it's at. Au naturale, as my mum likes to say. Here's a collection of sweaters I'll be kicking around in (or wishing I was) come winter.

While most Hollywood starlets (or wannabe starlets) often get confused between an awards ceremony and their 1990s prom (Jennifer Love Hewitt, I'm looking at you), here's the perfect example of when straying off the beaten track is the best. thing. ever. Tilda Swinton in Jil Sander spring '11. Of course, only Tilda (and her white gold locks) could pull this off. And with that wink, I think she knows it. This woman is cool. Period.

Nonchalant Minimalism

These photos were taken outside Le Grand Hotel in Paris right after the Balmain SS11 show in September last (last!) year. While everyone was snapping away at the Balmain-clad ADR, (including me, until I spied otherwise) Mademoiselle Agnés snuck past, largely unnoticed by the blogger throng. With her Zanotti for Balmain satin booties and that amazing leather panelled Celine coat, how could you not notice? It's quite striking when seeing these two distinct looks, fashion poles apart, in the one frame. While Anna, God love her, is proud in her 'maximalist' style, not occasionally showing up to a designer's show in one of their earlier creations (that she's never worn before, no less), Agnés' style is much more minimal. It's not refined to extent of minimalism's trademarked sleek hair and Calvin Klein, but certain elements are certainly pared back. On reflection, I understand why Agnés didn't receive the same amount of attention as ADR, and I think it has less to do with the level of fame, and more to do with the style. Something so simple (if Balmain and Celine are considered simple) are donned by the wearer more often than not to have that effect; so they are the ones wearing the clothes, not the other way around. A plain pair of skinny army-green cargos tucked into heeled boots, teamed with a loose tee the same colour as the straight-lined jacket. Easy. Effortless. Just like dressing should be. Perhaps we can coin a new term in reference to this French sort of minimalism, after all; many a French editor (Emmanuelle Alt and Geraldine Saglio to name two) have this look down to a (ripped) tee. Nonchalant Minimalism.

Sydney Greetings

I arrived in Sydney Monday night, and while I think I've always been a Melbourne girl (out of the two) it hasn't even been three days and I'm nearly a convert. My detached upstairs granny flat (let's call it a loft) is absolutely amazing, and is near enough to the CBD to not be a hastle yet far enough that I don't have to contend with a constant stream of traffic. It really is true when they say "it will all fall into place" - as I've already got somewhere to live to live, cemented an internship at a magazine in the city and almost have a part time job. Very lucky so far!

Went and sat down in Hyde Park after my meeting today, and got arty with Instagram. I then headed down Crown Street, and wound my way through Surry Hills and then down Oxford Street and Glenmore Road in Paddington, stopping at Land's End to peruse the racks of their summer clearance. Of course the thing I liked most ( a Proenza PS1 pouchette) was just about the only thing not on sale. Typical. Tomorrow I think I'll go for a wander down at Maroubra (one of the best beaches in Sydney, or so I've been told) and make a start on a freelance writing gig I've been offered. Which just so happens to pay in magazines. Works for me!

Waist(less) Coats

With all this talk of masculine tailoring, the most obvious (and easiest to wear no doubt) is the omission of the waistline. While a cinched waist will always remain a classic, the looser fit allows for a modern take on separates, especially where proportions are concerned. As seen in many a pre-fall collection, including Celine, Stella McCartney, Jil Sander and even Alber Elbaz's females-should-dress-as-females Lanvin - the last inclusion showing that this shape can be as much for the girls as it is for the boys. And it wouldn't be a waistless season without the drop-waists at the house that Coco built - Chanel.

Take style cues from ex-EiC of Vogue Paris, Carine Roitfeld, for whom tights and obligatory heels create the streamlined opposite of her coat. Or make like model Martha Streck, whose waist is ever so sightly nipped in under her camel coat, or Natalia Alaverdian, whose lengthened silhouette is helped by a form-skimming maxi skirt. By combining a voluminous coat with more fitted pieces, big (and even baggy) shapes are suddenly a far cry from manly.

Natasha Poly and COS. Two of my favourite things. Shot alongside Eddie Klint by Alasdair McLellan for the Swedish label's autumn/winer 07/08 campaign and lookbook. I've never seen these shots of Nat before, which is surprising because on many a rainy day I find myself traipsing back through her old tFS threads. I love her with brown hair, and now she's gone back to it I am reminded of the days when she was just starting out. Blonde or brown, these shots are breathtaking. Soft and whimsical but at the same time strong and resilient. The perfect embodiment of the phrase "they only have eyes for each other", and with these two, I almost forget it's just a fashion shoot. But then again, when it looks this good, the question becomes; is it? That's the thing about great photography, it captures a moment that can forever be real.

I'm so glad I received it as a gift, otherwise I was simply going to go buy it myself - but this way it has meaning, and every time I wear it I will be reminded I truly do have the greatest friends a girl could wish for. The Olsen Influence

"We wanted to do something low-key and to the point," said Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen in reference to their very first runway show for their label, The Row, in February last year. It's not often you can say the same consistent aesthetic runs through each and every collection of a designer, but with the Olsens, this is simply case in point. Furthermore, it's not every day that a fledgling label draws front-rowers like Chloë Sevigny and includes runway names like Natasha Poly, Sasha Pivovarova and Sigrid Agren. Simply put, the Olsens aren't your average designing duo. For a pair that established their roots within the entertainment industry, it is a testament to their fashion credentials that they are sometimes forgotten as actresses, and thought of only as designers. For me, every collection since their very first (including their stuff for secondary label, Elizabeth & James) further proves this point. Simple, easy-to-wear clothing whose focus is on cut and fit rather than unnecessary detail, is a formula that obviously works for the sisters. And they don't look like letting up soon. The simple white tee, the mailbox clutch... and the most incredible draped nude dress I've laid my eyes on. These pieces are amazing. Forget asking me to choose, I want them all. Available exclusively for Swedish customers February 3rd. Too bad I don't live in Sweden. Definitely calls for a ring around to a few European contacts in Gothenburg.

"I was thinking about everybody's obsession with being famous" Miuccia Prada said in reference to the choice of the red flooring of her Miu Miu runway. And while the title of this post may be more obviously applicable to Miuccia's Prada show, where dancing monkeys featured as reappearing motifs, I feel it has more relevance to her latest outing for Miu Miu. Saying that, the more delving one does into any Miuccia show, the more questions remain unanswered. She is like the George Orwell of the fashion world, every show containing an almost satirical (or at the very least, allegorical) commentary on the society in which we live. The silver lamé dress with leather appliqué (or rather, the placement of said appliqué) could be fraught with sexual innuendo as to the repetition within Hollywood's fishbowl. Who knows? Or perhaps, in Miuccia's way, she was doing nothing more than provoking us to ask unanswerable questions, all the while showing us pretty little things to tempt us into her world. Regardless of intention, any messages will be translated differently depending on the experiences of the receiver. The more I consider the details, the more I am reminded of the Orwell's Seven Commandments of Animalism, where I am sure many in that elusive Hollywood scene are convinced they may be just that little bit more equal than those outside of it.

Regardless of varying interpretations, it all begs the common question: when isn't fashion allegorical? Most, if not all, collections have a theme, a starting point; inspiration that was based on something, which more often than not is carried right through to the end product. That end product, which, upon viewing, requires thought on behalf of the audience to decipher and do what they will with any possible meanings. Still think fashion is nothing more than a slew of pretty dresses? Take a closer look at any fashion editorial, and you'd be hard pressed to explain why they're often referred to as "fashion stories". Because, I'm afraid, stories they (as well as the dresses within them) do tell.

Along with Dutch newbie Daphne Groeneveld and albino model Stephen Thompson we have Tisci favourite Mariacarla Boscono in front of the lens once again. They've kept the same hauntingly beautiful thread running through the rest of the pictures, and I love that contrasting shadow shot, where Daphne appears almost as Mariacarla's ghost. And of course, as predicted since her Paris exclusive for the house back in September, Natasha Poly (and her new brown locks) also landed a spot.

Valentino and Givenchy. Makers of some of the best studded heels going around. Valentino's autumn/winter 2010 studded heels were endorsed by nearly every editor and front-rower at the spring shows. Especially popular (although not on my radar) were the kitten-heels, with Alexa Chung and even Giovanna Battaglia getting back to basics (if you call Valentino a basic) with the lower-to-the-ground variety. And when talking about anything studded, who can forget C.Centenera, self-proclaimed lover of anything studded, with her t-bar Givenchy sandals.

Bright skirts and white shirts

Raf Simons for Jil Sander spring 2011. Minimalism's inverse. Maximalism. Couture Giganticism. Terms all considered by Simons himself when it came to describing the inspiration behind his latest collection in which no colour was spared. Fuchsia. Bright orange. Blue, green red. And in every combination imaginable. After the bright and ballooning skirts, whose tailored volume was played down with plain white tees, came the colour-blocking. A pink button-down tucked into orange flares finished with a royal purple coat. A cropped coral blazer over a magenta shirt with a burnt orange peplum. Purple over red and then pink cigarette pants, hidden beneath a green coat; red tucked into blue layers, and a splash of yellow for good measure. Colours that might otherwise be overwhelming were pulled off in the surprisingly simplest of ways. The tailoring was nothing but clean, and the cleverness was found, aside from the tricky colour combinations, in a fitted tee tucked into a puffball skirt, stiff collars with silken oxford shirting, and of course the voluminous lengths of it all. I'm not usually one for excess, but when maximalism becomes minimal - stripped back to the very basics of colour and shape and line - I'm all for it.

Two (or should I say three... cubed) of my current favourites. Shoes from Alexander Wang's resort 2011 collection: Noemi, Freja (an update of the original) and Kasia. And not forgetting the one and only pocket tee, which will always be a perennial favourite. Then we have the clutch version of the famed PS1 messenger bag by Proenza Schouler, fondly (and appropriately) coined 'the pouchette'. What I love most about these accessories however, apart from the bleeding obvious, is they seem to go with... everything. That's right, even more leather, in the way of an Acne a-line, 3.1 Phillip Lims or a Catherine Malandrino mini. And my soon-to-be delivered Michael Kors chronograph watch and (hopefully!!!) Jordan Askill heart ring don't look out of place either.

Let's be honest, these outfits aren't anything special, and they don't try too hard to be fashion-y... which is exactly why I love them. Clean, simple and minimal. Just the way I like my dressing. And proof that an overdose of leather can be done in an Australian summer. Need further convincing? Enter Christine Centenera, to the rescue once again- this time in Paris, Celine, and her new favourite Alaias. Oh yeah, and lots of leather.

New Beginnings

And so starts another year. Making some grandiose resolution to change my life isn't really me, so I guess my resolve will quite simply be to work hard. And always keep laughing. If my dad saw this he would probably correct my word choice and go for something like "cackling", which is a rather more accurate description of what I do these days anyway. Moving on (quite literally, in fact), this year holds a lot of changes for me. It is the first of 16 consecutive years that I will no longer be a student. I am moving out of home for the very first time and heading to the big smoke (coming from Adelaide, it most definitely is!) of Sydney, to get some reeeeal experience in "my chosen career field." While I won't quite be scaling the top of the Opera House in YSL tribtoos like Miss Imbruglia (I'd much rather do so in Wangs), I will hopefully be involved with something related to this shot. Cue end of jumbled hinting.

With no job, no house and only the faint promise of an internship behind me... 2011 is shaping up to be the year of the unknown. And bring it on, I say.

I love everything about all of this fine jewellery. There's something about the juxtaposition of such a thin and dainty band with more heavier, solid pieces. I plan to pair my Jordan Askill (when I get one, of course) with my new Michael Kors gold man-style watch. It's just like wearing a sweet, sequin skirt (long-line, Taylor Tomasi style) with a slightly scruffy oversized sweatshirt. Been looking for winged earrings like those Gina Tricots for months. Need them in my life, now!

Nude red

Back to basics. Almost. I love this almost unexpected take on the continuing nude trend- pairing it with red. Red, especially in the lovely coral shade as seen on Frida and Jac at No. 21 by Alessandro Dell'Acqua breathes a life of fresh air into the continuing nude obsession. The delightful pairing instantly transforms those nude pieces that for the winter were more suitably paired with charcoals, khakis and camels and gives it a summer twist. I first noticed this pairing at Valentino AW 2010 (Lagerfeld ahead of the game, again? It cannot be) where the trademark red ruffles were interspersed with the sheerest of nudes, making for a softer, more subtle take on the siren shade. Trust Miss Olsen to already have jumped on the bandwagon; she paired her couture Christain Lacroix gown with a red furry jacket for the 2010 ELLE Style Awards back in February. Not to sure how to mix the two shades into an outfit on their own? Make like Abbey Lee and add a simple slick of coral lipstick to brighten up the beige backdrop- and newly bleached blonde hair. on a side note- also loving her Australian-designed Willow jacket.

Burberry Pre-Fall 2011

Bye-bye biker babes. Farewell snakeskin, spikes and studs. Make way for refined, form-fitting flares, sleek tuxedos and modern takes on the classic trench, and suddenly we've got a collection Thomas Burberry would recognise. Christopher Bailey's latest pre-fall (or autumn, as us Aussies like to say) showing was a stark (and welcomed) departure from the spray on leathers and shrunken shapes of spring. Gone are the neons and metallics, which felt more fad than fashion, having been replaced with a beautiful pre-autumnal (how appropriate) array of colours. Steel blues and greys, rusts, mustards and forest greens were combined in a way that fondly evoked a lingering summer, whilst the emphasis on black allowed for the pared-back silhouettes to take centre stage. And what wonderful silhouettes these were.

Jackets were fitted, rather than shrunken, and hemlines moved south as coats were revived from their motorcycle counterparts. Edges were finished with sheared rabbit fur, possibly in reference to the ever so successful shearling aviator jackets of last winter. The more subtle approach was made all the more smart when considering this is a collection that remains on store shelves for a good six months, bridging the gap between seasons. Not sure how many wool coats will sell in Australia during the tail-end of summer, but having experienced a European October, I'm willing to bet it's a different story for the brand's home country. And when it comes to coats, trust Bailey to deliver. Double-breasted, cinched, knee-length, cropped; wool, fur, puffer- talk about something for everyone (and every temperature, natch).

And finally, the flares. Possibly the standout item in the entire collection; these pants were beautifully cut slim-line versions of their 70s counterparts. The silhouette moved seamlessly from day to night, to ensure it's not just the boys who get to rock a tux when the sun goes down. And just like that, Bailey is back.

Rather, I've been admiring from afar as she's blitzed the runways of Balenciaga and Chanel, and scowled up at me from the pages (and cover) of Bazaar. Aside from her eyebrows, those who just cannot get enough (and there must be plenty, for she was listed as a top 10 newcomer by models.com) have LOVE editor Katie Grand to thank. Katie, who styled shows for Ungaro, Giles and Topshop Unique is arguably flying the biggest flag for Bambi's international career. I saw this backstage picture of her at the Chanel Paris-Byzance pre-fall show, and couldn't resist posting it. And here's where, for probably the only time in my life, I'll let the picture (and the lighting...ok, and maybe those brows) do all the talking.

Natasha's Givenchy

It's no surprise that Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci is most definitely pro-Poly. Both Nat and Tisci made their simultaneous debuts for the house back in 2005 for the autumn haute couture collections. Natasha has been a regular fixture in Tisci's line-up ever since, up until until the most recent spring/summer 2011 shows, where she was a Paris exclusive. Meaning: she was booked exclusively for Givenchy- and did not walk in any other Parisian show. She featured in their autumn/winter 2008 campaign alongside fellow Tisci favourite Mariacarla Boscono, Lara Stone and Lakshmi Menon. And who can forget the Natasha Obsessed issue of Muse, where she was shot by none other than Riccardo himself for the cover (and spread) featuring many a Givenchy accessory, including the infamous couture crown of... spikes. She had the first look (of 11) for the house's latest couture showing, and nabbed the November 2010 cover of Vogue Paris, shot by Mario Sorrenti, styled with the same brown (yes, brown!) plaits she sported for her Givenchy exclusive. Where is all this leading, you may ask? To a spot in the new Givenchy campaign, I say.

Here's the first leaked imaged from the SS 2011 camapign, so far featuring Dutch newcomer Daphne Groeneveld (another Tisci favourite who was also featured in the exclusive spring couture lineup) and albino model Stephen Thompson. Shot by photographic duo Mert & Marcus, this picture is hauntingly beautiful. The black and white combined with the overlapping exposure makes for a campaign that will be nothing short of mesmerising. Watch this space.

Rubber Souls

I couldn't resist posting these pictures I found of a Gisele Bünchen spread (and cover too, natch) for the December issue of Vogue Italia. Snapped by Steven Miesel, the editorial features the model (or more accurately, the genetically insane freak of nature) swathed in little more than layers of latex. I love how the photos capture something other than the sexy and sultry side she usually gives off; her expressions combine humour and high fashion to a (rubber) tee.

There's something about this last expression that is just so, so good. It's all in the eyebrows. It reminds me of a boy I used to be quite fond of (who will luckily never read this) who used to do the same thing when looking in the mirror to fix his hair in the morning. One of my favourite expressions in the world, and Gisele captures it perfectly.

Morebidly obsessed with... Fenton/ Fallon

The Vieuphoria. The one that started it all. I stumbled across it during my daily (ok, let's be honest, more like hourly) perusal of Syle.com's Style File blog. Featured in On Our Radar, ever since I've seen it, it's been on mine too. It definitely fits with my growing penchant for opposites and contradictions, that's for sure. The gunmetal finish gives a more edgy contrast than a gleaming silver chain, and the stones are removed of any princess-quality with the added spike factor. I'd pair this baby with a simple white tee, my slightly torn, light blue skinny jeans and black Camilla Skovgaard (-inspired, naturally) saw-edged booties, and an uninspired pairing instantly becomes an outfit. Of course, it's been sold out on Shopbop (and every other US retailer I know of that ships to Australia) for months.

All is not lost however, as the brains behind the label Dana Lorenz has teamed up with friend and creative director of J. Crew to come up with the suitably-named capsule collection: Fenton/Fallon for J. Crew. Priced slightly under the original Fenton pieces, they are by no means any less of a statement. Judging by the amount of layered chains, spikes and jewels, it probably works the other way around. Fans include First Lady MObama, famous (not only for being the President's wife) but for championing up-and-coming American designers (Jason Wu anyone?) and of course, accessories editors Taylor Tomasi Hill. When it comes to Fenton/Fallon, I do not discriminate. Spikes, jewels, gold, silver, chain, crystal... the list goes on. And usually, the more, the better.

Miss Magda

This backstage picture completely captivates me. I'm not sure what it is, but there's something about the way she's sitting there, waiting, completely at ease in her ballerina tutu, rocking gently on her heels; exuding calm before the storm, that is nothing short of serene. So excited that one of my high fashion favourites, Magdalena Frackowiak, did the Victoria's Secret show this year. I know I've talked about the crossover between commercial and high fashion re: VS before (read: here) but it seems the lines continually keep on blurring between the two. Whatever the view, I think Magda made the transition perfectly. She's one of those models whose versatility never ceases to surprise; one day she's all chiseled cheekbones and solemn stares - the epitome of an editorial model - the next she's giggling down the VS runway, dimples and wings in tow. A quick scan of the forums over Magda's thread at tFS, and many agree that she was definitely the standout of the show. She had the perfect combination of cheeky winks, waves and air-kisses, without being over the top or too serious- something I'm sure is much harder than it seems.

Giampaolo Sgura for Vogue Korea

This spread by Cameron Krone for Viva! Moda is beyond amazing. With the inspiration being the 90's supermodel series by Peter Lindberg, Magda appeared alongside Anna Jagodzinska, Monika 'Jac' Jagaciak, Kasia Struss and Anja Rubik in a spread dedicated to the top five Polish models. I love the simplicity of the styling - all matching Versus silhouettes and strappy sandals - allowing the beautiful photography to really make the pictures a celebration of the wearers, which is really what fashion is all about.

I cannot get enough of envelope clutches- especially the ones with the pointed flaps. They remind me of the years gone by when people sat down- with a paper and pen, no less - and actually wrote letters to one another. As a gen Y-er, I missed out on the bulk of the real letter-sending, but I can still remember the thrill I got when, whilst rummaging through the straight-edged bills, I came across the pointed flap of a personally addressed letter. Whether it be the minimal gold detail of Celine's envelope bags, the added zips on the newest covetable Wang-bag or (from the range that started it all) the patent leather of the YSL Y-mail clutch, these bags make me nostalgic for the days of letters. Maybe it's the contradiction of this old-school charm with today's clean lines and unfussy details that make for a nice pairing, but whatever it is, I just cannot get enough of these gorgeous bags. Trust the eternally stylish Miss Palermo (with her Hermès of course) to be getting in on the (albeit straight) envelope action.

Not wanting to spend my life savings on a crocodile skin bag (cough, Olivia, cough) my next envelope of choice? This leopard buck skin clutch bag from Zara. Just one of the many reasons I cannot wait for their 2011 Australian opening. Happy New Year indeed.

When one is asked to think of a country from which the world's most beautiful models hail, Brazil is never far from the top. Gisele, Adriana, Alessandra, Isabeli... some of the industry's most well-known, highest-paid models - their names themselves ooze sex appeal - argument enough that Brazilian woman are the most beautiful. Or so it would seem. Overt sexuality is only one interpretation of beauty, and this is one interpretation that the Brazilians can definitely lay claim to. Lately, it feels like fashion is favouring a different kind of beauty. The best way to describe it would quite simply be understated. Less exaggerated. Pared-back. Minimal. Much like the clothes we are seeing on the runways. Céline. Chloé. Calvin Klein.

A newcomer fast becoming a favourite of mine is Caroline Brasch Nielsen, hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark. Making her first international appearance in Paris for Fall/Winter 2010, she debuted for Dries Van Noten and opened for Valentino and Sharon Whauchob. In the same season she also walked for the likes of Balenciaga, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Céline. She must have impressed Nicholas Ghesquière at least, because she nabbed a spot in Balenciaga's FW 2010 campaign- alongside Stella Tennant, Karen Elson and fellow country (wo)man Freja Beha Erichsen. She walked for no less than 60 shows in the most recent Spring/Summer 2011 season, opening 6 (including Narciso Rodriguez, Alberta Ferretti and Nina Ricci) and closing 4, one of which was Valentino. It comes as no surprise then that she was ranked third in FTV's latest first face countdown (behind Freja and Miss Kloss). Not bad for a 17 year old who has only been in the modelling game for 6 months.

I must say there is something captivating about these Danish girls - Freja has a similarly compelling nature. Reserved, almost to the point of shyness; but to the extent that it becomes enchanting, rather than awkward. Those insane cheekbones and solemn stare are softened with dimples, making sulky look serene. Ethereal, almost. After seeing her in Céline Resort I struggle to think of another girl who would have modeled that collection as perfect as she. She captured Phoebe Philo's minimalism to a (sharply cut) tee, and I wouldn't be suprised if some of her quiet freshness served as inspiration for Philo's (and many others, judging by the sheer number of shows she walked) latest spring collections. Fingers crossed for a campaign. To me she embodies THE Céline girl, and although 'obsession' doesn't quite seem the right word for Philo, here's hoping for something similar to Largerfeld's with Freja. Models as muses, as they say. Must just be those great Danes. Siri Tollerød, Frida Gustavsson, Caroline and Freja, forget Brazil; those Nordic waters are where it's at.

The march of the fashion editor

Fashion editors. No longer are they just an elusive name featured in the masthead of your favourite magazine. Thanks mainly due to this decade's blogging phenomenon, the obsession with fashion editors has grown to the extent they've become celebrities in their own right. Anna Dello Russo herself even cited fashion blogs as the main reason for her style-icon status. Although you'll always have those few in the industry who are quick to dismiss the relevance or credibility of now-famous bloggers such as BryanBoy, Tavi et. al, (maybe with resent for their overnight success as opposed to the old-school coffee mule cum assistant route) there's no doubt the personal style of ADR & Co. would be as noted/copied/loved if it weren't for (certain) bloggers. Without turning this into a bloggers vs editors argument (as an aside- I'll be taking the coffee-mule route), what I'm trying to say is that I'm more than thankful the focus of celebrity has shifted from the talentless Paris Hiltons of the world to people who have worked hard (and stylishly so) for their success. If nothing else, their rise to cult status (in the fashion world at least) provides all of us envious hangers-on (guilty) with some very worthy eye candy. And it probably doesn't hurt sales when their staff are seen practicing what they preach outside their glossy pages.

I love the line formation they've got going on- if you look a little closer you'll find they're all glued to their Blackberries- perusing the latest blogs, I'm sure.

While in Paris recently I was lucky enough to catch (several) glimpses of the infinitely amazing Anna Dello Russo. For those who have been living under a rock, she is the fashion director-at-large at Vogue Nippon, and famous for owning not one, but two apartments in Milan- one for her and her adorable chihuahua Cucciolina, and the other (climate-controlled, of course) to house her ever-expanding collection of designer clothes and shoes. You too would need a second house if you owned over 4000 pairs of shoes. (And for those who are currently rolling their eyes at the excess of it all- her plan is to eventually have her collection archived so that it can be studied by fashion students, historians and enthusiasts alike.)

She is even more gorgeous in person than in photos, and I'm not just referring to her glamorous style (or those legs). She was all too happy to flash her 400-watt smile every which way, pose for street-style bloggers and crazy paps and repeat with loving detail what (or who) exactly she was wearing. Whilst other high-profile editors slinked away silently through the crowd gathered outside of Le Grand Hotel, Anna seemed genuinely delighted to stand there and share her love for fashion with all. I doubt that there is anyone in the world who loves fashion more that ADR, and it is refreshing to see someone who is as proud in their passion as she.

My First Fashion Show

My name's Ellie and I'm obsessed. An addict, some might call me. Shakes. Splutters. Physical aches. Just some of the symptoms I display if I don't get my regular fix. Keeping in mind the nature of this blog, I'm sure it has become obvious by now to those who have forgiven me for the lame opening and are continuing to read, just what sort of an addiction I am talking about. This isn't called Fashion Morebidity (think about it... morbid?) for nothing. So why is it you may ask that I am blabbering about such an addiction all of a sudden, if I have named my blog with this in mind all along? Well, you see, that is where we come to the point of all this. If I thought I was hooked before... well, that was then. Now? There is no hope for me. Obsessed. Enthralled. Trapped. Completely and utterly done for. I am a goner. For I have been to my first international fashion show.

What luck that I found myself smack bang in the middle of Paris during Fashion Week. Well, it wasn't an entire coincidence but it wasn't meticulously planned that way. So there I was, on a sunny September Wednesday, the second day of the ready-to-wear shows for the Paris Spring/Summer 2011 season- the last city of the major circuit. With my measly 3MB of international roaming (thanks T-Mobile) I managed to look up the locations of several shows that day and decided I would wander over to le Pont Alexandre III, which seemed to be one of the main locations for the week. As an aside, this is one of the most beautiful bridges in Paris, and is in view of many famous Parisian landmarks: the Eiffel Tower, les Invalides and le Grand Palais to name a few. Wandering aimlessly down the Champs-Élysées, I spied her. Sleek and shiny; groomed, was what she was. With her lithe frame swathed in head-to-toe black, a splash of neon citrus silk glinted among the dark layers and a Chanel 2.55 chain bag hung nonchalantly from her shoulder, she positively smelled of fashion. And she was holding an invitation. Ah ha! She was my answer, my ticket to an elusive glimpse of the goings-on of a fashion show, for a glimpse is all I was ever after. After carefully maintaining my distance behind her (ever the perfect stalker) I noticed a small flaw in my plan. She was lost. After several self-captured pics for her MySpace, she too realised the inevitable and lowered herself to asking some no-name passer-by where indeed she was headed. By this time, I had already figured out for myself the location of the show. Too bad I was pretty sure she was onto my pathetic following attempts, or I could've marched boldly on ahead. So after a few more wrong turns, self-portraits and aimless wandering, we both stumbled off Avenue Montaigne past the Grand Palais and onto Pont Alexandre III.

Guy Laroche. Admittedly not a designer I know a whole lot about. I could ramble off a whole lot of wiki facts (ha, wiki facts) but as my university lecturers say that never does anyone good. As the designer has since passed on, the artistic director of the house is now Marcel Marongiu, and ready-to-wear shows have been running in Paris since 2007. Anyway, I was quite content with my space on the bridge's parapet; close enough so I could see the action but far enough away I could still be a little incognito. So as the time ticked over to 12.30pm (half an hour after the official starting time) and the guests slowly started to file their way past the obviously uninvited street-style photographers and bloggers (aka me) I'd made up my mind that this was as far as I was going to get, nothing to see here folks. But then Geraldine Saglio (assistant to French Vogue's Emmanuelle Alt) whisked past me, and was ushered into the show at the now empty entrance. And a few of the initial hangers-on started to go in without so much as a second glance. It was now or never. I took a breath and quickly descended the stairs as if I belonged. I stood in front of the gated entrance and before I had a chance to mumble so much as excusez-moi, the security guard stepped out of my way with nothing more than a head tilt. I was in! There I stood, a mere four rows from the front as the beat found its way into my viens whilst models flounced past me towards the wall of steady flashbulbs. And the rest is history.

Couture by Night

I wasn't going to blog today, I swear. I was going to be a good girl and finish all my assignments. But then, just as I was almost done with my quick fix of editorial for the day, I found this. I've always said to myself that someday I would start an inspiration wall of sorts, someplace to hang all the stories, snapshots, styles and supers that have been saved and stored over the years, but have never found that one really great image to propel me to do so. Until now. Natasha Poly and Baptiste Giabiconi, lensed by Karl Lagerfeld (who else?) for Numéro #116. Featured in the editorial Couture by Night, I love every single element of this shot.

I love the two street lamps in the background; the way they cast a mellow shadow over the provincial apartments whilst providing a scene for these wandering lovers of the night. I love the ease with which Baptiste is holding Natasha, like she is nothing more than her own dainty champagne flute. I love the black and white of the photography, and how it is deliberately mirrored through their matching couture. I love the way Natasha's toes are pointed down, like a ballerina; aware but effortless in her positioning at all times. I love his strong, and her soft - but both smouldering - stares. I love it, I love it all.

Topshop Twiggy

What else can be more iconic in British fashion than Topshop and Twiggy? Now it seems the two have come together, yet somehow not in the way either imagined, I'm sure. Flicking through the latest Topshop collection I spied this fabulous kimono featuring an ink-splatter print. Look closely and you'll find it's actually haphazardly placed twigs. Ah, all is revealed. Anyway, in the spirit of my love for Topshop (and my impending trip back to its home country) here's a collection of a few of the things I have my eye on for when I set foot in their Oxford Street store. What better combination is there than a lightweight, oversized knit cinched in with a cropped leather bustier? Teamed with ripped jeans, wedge boots and topped off with a the Twiggy waterfall jacket? And if we're channelling the mod posterchild for the swinging 60s, we can't dare forget those kohl-rimmed eyes.

Shout out: Adelaide fash-pack

Calling all emerging Adelaide fashion designers! Whether you're still a student, a recent design grad, or anyone else who thinks they've got enough design talent for an upcoming showcase, we are looking for YOU.

Titled "The Uglee Challenge" - the show is the brainchild of fellow Adelaide blogger + law student Katherine, who has been documenting her own "uglee" makeovers (for want of a better word) over at her blog, CaughtCouture.

The basic concept is turning an odd (and don't forget, ugly) assortment of discarded clothing into something new and beautiful, using parts from all of the items as well as 1 random object. The chosen designers will be provided with this goody-bag and fashionable freedom to get their creative juices flowing, with the general theme of the show being "Bad Romance". Only restriction? The finished garment must incorporate at least 20% of each ugly piece.

The chosen contestants will get to show off their garments in a fashion show on the 24th of November at Garage Bar, along with entertainment, high tea and cameos by some already established labels. The night aims to capture the design talent of Adelaide, as well as promote other SA-based creatives and business, and all proceeds raised will go towards CanTeen.

If this sounds like a great chance to gain some exposure and work with others in Adelaide's fashion scene, we'd love to hear from you (aspiring designers or otherwise).

New World

I wish I could read Russian. As it is, I can't, so I'll have to settle for being able to read fashion. A quick scan of the blogosphere however, reveals the title of this editorial as "New World." I couldn't think of anything more suitable given this is the last issue of Russian Vogue under founding editor, Aliona Doletskaya. Although at the time of publication, new EIC Victoria Davydova had already taken up post, due to the time lag in magazine-land, we won't see Davydova's work until the October issue. And judging by this issue, the pressure's certainly on. Not that it wasn't before. Since its inception just 12 years ago, Vogue Russia has been viewed as one of the most influential editions of Vogue- right up there with Editrix Roitfeld's Paris edition.

As well as the title's nod to the new editorship, it heralds September's change of season, where summer turns over a new leaf (pardon the pun) and fades to fall. At least in the northern hemisphere, where all the fall/winter collections are beginning to hit stores. It picks up on the notion that women are on the collective cusp of bidding farewell to the old and eagerly embracing the new. Don't be fooled that this rejection of the outdated in favour of on-trend pieces is all part of a vicious cycle that will begin again come next season. Quite the opposite. In fact, it is this cycle of chasing what is "new" and "on-trend" which appears to be dwindling, as investment dressing has never been more appropriate; or popular. Trend-forecasting will never disappear completely. There will always be the latest heel (block, kitten, wedge) or skirt (full, maxi, body-conscious) or even handbag (oversized, across-the-body, box) but the fashion tide seems to be turning towards something more... sustainable. Towards something that can offer both style and longevity. Towards something that can offer what trends cannot: timelessness.

The appropriately named "New World" story, shot by Sharif Hamza features an all-star cast including Alessandra Ambrosio, Coco Rocha, Ana Beatriz Barros and Dree Hemingway. Under the styling genius of Simon Robbins, the story features designs by Chloé, Michael Kors, Max Mara, Burberry, Calvin Klein and Céline, to name a few. All these designers have released collections of which many have had that certain timeless quality of late. Think back to all of the so-called trends that this season has been labelled as sporting. Coats? Fur? Neutral-hues? Minimalism? Save for the current penchant for all things animal print (which I cannot see disappearing in a hurry) the current pared-back aesthetic can apply season after season and then serve as the base for many a would-be trend afterwards. And this is the new world into which fashion, and Vogue Russia, is emerging into.

Finally, for those who are still confused as to why fashion editorials, or spreads, are referred to as 'stories', what better example than this. No matter what language, if any, the story is told, if it is exectuted well, with stylists, photographers, models and all those behind-the-scenes collaborating in a way as cohesive as this- the message is loud and clear. Despite the fact that the words, to most of us, are much less discernable. No trend is on-trend. And that, my friends, is the moral of this story. New world indeed.

First Lady of Vogue

All this election-talk is doing my head in. And, no, I'm not talking about Anna Wintour, despite the title possibly being a fraction misleading. Actually, not really, if you consider the number of Vogue jobs this recruit has nabbed in the past few weeks. For it's our very own Miranda Kerr, cover girl of the September issue of Spanish Vogue, with her very first Vogue cover (as mentioned here.) Along with the cover, shot by Tom Munro, she features in a spread with a slight throwback to the models of the 90s; legs included.

She also featured in...wait for it; 3 editorials for US Vogue this month, 2 shot by Vogue's photographer of choice, Steven Meisel and the other by Peter Lindbergh. Sitting alongside other top models including Lara Stone, Doutzen Kroes, Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima, she isn't about to relinquish her number 15 spot on MDC's list anytime soon. Quite the contrary, actually. She is fast becoming a favourite of both Meisel (who previously shot her in Prada's fall campaign) and Vogue's EIC herself, so it's just a matter of time before she lands a cover. Still not convinced of her staying power? Look out for next month's issue of Vogue Italia- she'll be on the cover.

I Die (for fashion)

Taking Rachel Zoe's expression "I Die" literally, US Harper's Bazaar have raised the bar with this clever little spread featuring the celebrity stylist for their latest issue. Zoe, snapped by Douglas Friedman, is captured alongside some of America's top designers, going in for the kill. Literally. So many metaphors and innuendos lurking under the surface of this shoot. It reminds me of the start of The September Issue where Anna Wintour sums up the misconceptions associated with the fashion industry and those who work within it brilliantly: "There is something about fashion that can make people very nervous." With that closing statement she levels a steely, unperturbed stare straight down the barrel of the camera, and we know. Interview over.

Some may say Anna Wintour intimidates people, but I beg to differ. Fashion intimidates people. For some, The September Issue was nothing more than a sneak peek into the exclusivity and luxury that normally lies just beyond the realms of reality. However, as a documentary into the inner workings of the fashion industry, I think it was much, much more than just a 'glimpse'. If you watch it multiple times (ahem, guilty) what first appears to be a standoffish, haughty or higher-than-thou attitude is simply an uncanny ability to edit her thoughts with just the right amount of candour to convey what needs to be said, and nothing more. "Just because you like to put on a beautiful Carolina Herrera dress... or a pair of J Brand blue jeans instead of something basic from K-Mart... doesn't mean that you're a dumb person."

Some people in this world think (and how wrongly so) that by caring about how you look and the way you dress, means that you care less about what is deemed to be of real importance, such as economics, or politics, or having a "real" career. So when people ask me what it is I love about fashion, what I can never seem to explain to them in the way I would like, in between my mutterings of Anna Wintour (who?) and their confused stares, is the intelligence of it all. The sheer wit and intellect that is required to conjure up such imagery and innuendo makes it one of the most challenging and (I'm willing to bet) rewarding industries to be involved in. The bravery and courage it takes to divert from the more traditional and socially acceptable career paths to pursue something you truly love is nothing short of inspirational. And I'm not just talking about fashion. Musicians, artists, sculptors, couturiers, writers, glass-blowers... for all those who have made a name for themselves under these titles, there are a million more busting their guts for nothing more than the love of the game. Determination to forge a way for oneself despite the throwbacks, despite the challenges and ridicule and years of giving it your all, is a world away from dumb. Working tirelessly to forge a way for yourself so that maybe one day, you can wake up and think 'I love my job' is possibly one of the smartest things I can think of. All this from a fashion editorial that reminded me of a documentary I once watched. It really is true what they say; a picture says a thousand words.

If someone told me I could only wear one shirt for the rest of my life, this would be it. This military shirt by Current/Elliott isn't called the Perfect Shirt for nothing. A shirt is probably the staple item in layering for in-between seasons. Team with a fur gilet and a woollen scarf and you're all set for a chilly autumn. Pair it with sandal-clogs and distressed boyfriend jeans and you've got yourself a go-to outfit for when the weather warms up. Now, to work on all the other items on my wishlist...namely that Celine box bag. And the PS1.Ok, let's just say I'll have it all and call it a day.

Stumbled upon these pictures with the lovely Toni Garrn the other day over at TFS, from Zara'a 2010 Fall campaign (shot by David Sims). Immediately jumped on their site to see the new collection, must say, I just can't get enough. Mostly because of the obvious Celine reference, no doubt. And I definitely see some Prada-like knits and Chloé leather skirtage, which is never a bad thing. Makes me all the more eager for the Spanish chain to finally hit our shores- just in time for my move to Sydney. How perfect! In the meantime, I will definitely be picking myself up that divine leopard print clutch and many a miliatry shirt when I make my way back over to Europe in September. More on this later, but - !!!!!!!!

Day 7: Taylor Tomasi Hill

After a long time coming, the final instalment of 7 editors in 7 days is here. Although, the problem was not entirely time related (or here goes my attempt at an excuse) - I just couldn't make up my mind as to which editor's personal style I would muse over. Vogue Nippon's fashion director at large Anna Dello Russo was pipped at the post by our current feature, even though she (and her famous two house-fulls of clothing) are more famously known and documented. In the end, I decided to stick with someone who's style (I would like to think) is closer to my own (or would be, had I the funds to indulge it!) So here she is, the final editor of the 7 days; Taylor Tomasi Hill, style and accessories director at US Marie Claire. With her style containing the same amount of fire as those trademark locks, she too is an editor with an otherwordly ability to pull different looks from the same incredible pieces. From her Norma Kamali cat-eye sunglasses to her favourite Phi pants and Rick Owens leather jacket, she is a self-proclaimed "clothing chameleon" that is forever experimenting, and in my opinion, never putting a YSL-heeled foot wrong. Brilliant.

Spring Celine

Celine Spring/Summer 2010. One of the best collections for accessories. One the best collections, period. How ironic that some of the most coveted accessories, which by their very nature are renowned for adding that extra something to an outfit; special pieces of adornment and detail, came from one of the most refined and minimalistic shows of the season. Ever since I saw that first pair of open toe wedge clogs on Constance Jablonski, I knew. And wanted.

And they've been popping up in pared-down editorials ever since. Carmen Kass in an Alexander Wang cape in an Arabian desert? Celine was there. Paired with an Isabel Marant rabbit-fur coat and another spring favourite - socks? Celine. And adorning the dainty feet of Chanel Iman for the Spring trends round-up for Vogue Spain? Celine, of course.

As for blogs, I'm probably the very last on the bandwagon (not that I havent lusted from afar since October last year). Shoe-obsessed Jane Aldridge teamed her tan leather clog sandals with suspenders and her boyfriend (jeans, of course). What is it with clogs and blogs? I don't think the Chanel-inspired chainstore studded variety will be a trend I'll be trying soon (much less the tasselled LVs), and while the silk-printed Miu Mius were indeed beautiful, they've got nothing on Celine. Minimal, refined, simple, with the perfect wedge and that golden, creamy caramel hue; nothing can beat it. And a classic box bag wouldn't go astray... then again neither would the rabbit fur lined satin pump, the envelope calfskin bag or the gold cuffs from fall. Sigh.

The September Issues

September. Without a doubt the most anticipated month for fashion magazines the world over. After all, it wasn't called The January/Febuary/March (you get the picture) Issue was it? Grab a copy of your favourite mag's September issue and you'll find all the latest ad campaigns, editorials and fashion features covering the latest Fall/Winter 2010 collections, as well as all the news from Paris Haute Couture fashion week. For me, I cannot wait to get my hands on the latest offerings from Vogue Australia and Harper's Bazaar. Judging by their covers, they won't dissappoint. Vogue have dedicated their entire issue to Aussie export Cat McNeil (currently sitting pretty at #12 on MDC, thank you very much), while HB have commissioned Elle Macpherson for their cover. I think Bazaar are right on the money with their cover choice, seeing as September is all about the fall collections and as Elle closed the show for Louis Vuitton, one of the biggest and most trend-defining collections for the FW10 season... looks like The Body is back. But, at three years shy of 50, had she ever left? What are you waiting for? Grab yours, NOW.

Day 6: Aliona Doletskaya

Aliona Doletskaya. Founding Editor-in-Chief, Vogue Russia. Now, after her shock resignation last week, ex EIC. 12 years ago, her job did not exist. Vogue Russia did not exist. Glossy fashion magazine culture in Russia barely existed. Enter Aliona. A graduate of the Faculty of Philology (linguistics) at Moscow State University and former doctoral candidate at Oxford University, Aliona broke away from the academic world to pursue a career in media and PR. With a stint as media consultant for DeBeers (yes, the diamonds), Aliona was approached by Condé Nast Russia to head up their "new project." There were no other high quality fashion publications in Russia at that time, so it was no easy feat to find the country's best and most creative fashion journalists, photographers and stylists. But, no surprises, Aliona did it. And the rest is history. After 12 years, 2 economic crises and countless first-class editorials, Vogue Russia is one of the most influential and revered editions of Vogue in the world. So as the fashion world bids farewell to one of its greats, another one stands poised in welcome. Aliona, we'll miss you!

Mrs. Bloom shoots Vogue... and Numéro, Again

Finally!! I know this is probably my tenth post on Miranda this month, but it can't be helped- this girl is on fire. Australia's best-known model has finally landed the holy grail of magazine covers; Vogue. She took a break out of her honeymoon (bless her) to head back to LA's Milk Studios for an editorial for Vogue Spain, and it can now be confirmed, will be appearing on the September cover. This confirmation comes via the shoot's hair stylist, Ben Skervin, who took to Twitter (where else in this social media obsessed day and age?!) announcing "Miranda Kerr sept Spanish Vogue cover and story!!!!" Miranda herself even tweeted yesterday that she "had to come back to LA for a one-day shoot with Vogue." It's not the first time she's worked for the mag, having featured in spreads for American Vogue and Vogue Russia, but it will be the first time she's landed a cover. Yay!

Just when you thought it couldn't get any bigger or better for the rapidly rising star, apparently, it can. After my post on her new campaign for Jil Sander's Fall 2010 collection, she was snapped by Sebastian Kim in a consecutive religious-themed spread (sporting a crown of thorns, no less) for Numéro #115, after appearing in a nun-inspired get up in issue #114 by Greg Kadel. (I'm willing to bet she'll snag a Numéro cover before the year is out.) This Vogue cover rounds out what has been a huge week for our favourite model export (sorry Abbey Lee, we still love you), which also included a secret wedding and a confirmed pregnancy. All these high fashion gigs are responsible for the fact she has now crept up to number 15 on models.com's list of top 50. This ranking places her ahead of big high fashion names such as Hanne Gaby Odiele, Magdalena Frackowiak, Karmen Pedaru, Anna Selezneva, Sigrid Agren and Caroline Trentini. Where's her Vogue Australia cover I hear you ask? Hmm...
